COVERED HOLDING AREA CONSTRUCTION
About the project:
The Client:
Elis is a multinational company that provides textile rental and maintenance services to businesses across sectors such as healthcare, hospitality and industry. Operating in 30 countries, Elis offers a full turnkey service model where it supplies, delivers, launders and redistributes items like workwear, linens, mats and healthcare products. Its core services include the rental and cleaning of uniforms, bed linen and healthcare items.
Requirement:
SM Engineering South West Ltd was approached by the client to provide a solution to issues with their automated weighing system for returned soiled linen. Previously, cages of linen were stored in an uncovered outdoor area, leaving them exposed to the weather. Upon inspection, it was found that rainwater was collecting in the linen and cages, increasing their weight and leading to inaccurate and inconsistent readings.
To resolve this, it was agreed that a covered holding area should be constructed for the returned soiled laundry. SM Engineering South West Ltd was commissioned to design and build the new facility.
The Job:
Following comprehensive planning and development, work commenced in October 2024 with the installation of BS 5837-compliant fencing—just one of many planning conditions associated with this complex project. SM Engineering carried out all groundworks and drainage in-house, using equipment supplied by their sister plant hire company.
The 2,000-square-foot structure was then erected and clad by SM Engineering’s skilled, IPAF-accredited engineers, working at height from MEWPs and supported on the ground by an 82 t/m HIAB crane. The careful selection and use of appropriate plant, equipment and qualified operators played a crucial role in ensuring the project was completed safely.
